Difference Between Nursing Homes and Assisted Living

What is the difference between nursing homes and assisted living?

There are many different types of senior living communities out there, and no “one size fits all” answer for your aging loved one. The key is learning about each individual community and what it has to offer – then determining what best fits the unique needs of your loved one and your family.

Through our Life Care program, Redstone Village offers residents the unique opportunity to take advantage of our full continuum of care – meaning residents continue living at Redstone whether assisted living, memory care or skilled nursing care is ever needed. If you’re considering assisted living communities and/or nursing home options, we’ll take a closer look at the two, as well as the senior care provided at Redstone Village.

What is a Nursing Home?

The term nursing home is used to refer to residential care for seniors providing around-the-clock skilled care, generally for those needing assistance for most or all of Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Nursing homes offer medical care by trained medical staff, such as a registered nurse or therapist, 24 hours a day. Redstone Village provides skilled nursing care in Fairview – where residents continue to benefit from our life-enriching activities and wellness-based programming.

What is Assisted Living?

Assisted living describes a type of residential community for seniors providing living quarters, support services and health care designed for those who need some level of support with their day-to-day routines. Usually, these services include a combination of meals, laundry, housekeeping, medication management and assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting and mobility as needed. Seniors in assisted living communities generally have a private apartment residence on campus with community spaces for dining and activities.

What is a Life Plan community?

With Life Plan benefits at Redstone Village, residents have the assurance that their health care needs are covered and their assets protected from any unexpected rise in healthcare costs. Our continuum of care provides highly specialized settings that are tailored to the needs of each resident on one campus.
