Huntsville, Alabama: The Rocket City

Shortly after the end of World War, a team of German scientists came to the U.S. to work on the creation of ballistic rockets. In 1950, the project was moved to Huntsville, where the team joined forces with U.S. Army specialists. Together, these scientists and their work ultimately led to the Saturn V rocket, the craft that sent the Apollo astronauts to the moon in 1969. On March 17, 1970, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center opened to the public on land donated by the U.S. Army and quickly earned the nickname the Rocket City. Since then, millions of visitors have stood in awe of the vast collection of rockets and memorabilia. The Rocket City continues to be a hub of technological development. Recently named “the STEM capital of the South” by financial website SmartAsset.com and the “STEM heart of the South” by NerdWallet.com, Huntsville’s penchant for progress has made sure the city is marked by its enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering and math.
